Janelle Tsao demonstrated her compassion by rescuing a small and ailing toucan named Touki.
As it turned out, Touki proved to be quite temperamental.
This exotic bird experiences distress when left alone without human companionship.
To address this issue, Janelle relies on the assistance of a friend who stays with Touki whenever she needs to leave the house.
As a result, Janelle has foregone taking a vacation for over two years due to her pet toucan’s severe separation anxiety.
If Touki is left without company, he vocalizes loudly until someone returns to be by his side.
According to Janelle’s recollection, “Touki is like a flying child. He’s delightful and curious, always eager to explore. He can climb anywhere. Yesterday, I sliced some tomatoes and placed them in a tightly sealed bowl to prevent him from eating them. But Touki flew to the table, deftly opened the lid, snatched the tomato, then swiftly flew up to the second floor, devouring it before I could react.”
Caring for a toucan entails significant time, effort, and financial commitment.
For instance, Touki’s diet exclusively consists of fresh and costly fruits, vegetables, and berries.
Moreover, the toucan relieves itself wherever it pleases, requiring frequent clean-up every ten minutes.
“When I first laid eyes on him, my heart melted instantly. He was so tranquil and timid, perched in a cage. It was apparent that he had suffered an injury. At that moment, I made a heartfelt promise to love and care for him to the best of my abilities,” shared Janelle.
While an exotic bird like Touki should ideally reside in its natural habitat, he has grown too accustomed to human presence. Consequently, releasing him into the wild would pose challenges to his safety and well-being.
