While exploring the coast in search of an ideal diving spot, the man’s attention was captivated by a peculiar white object in the distance. Curiosity piqued, he approached the object and soon realized that he had stumbled upon a colossal squid measuring a staggering four meters in length.
The man, named Daniel, had initially planned to rendezvous with his brothers, Jack and Matthew, for a weekend of diving and spearfishing. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when they encountered the extraordinary sighting.
Pointing towards the ocean, one of the brothers inquired about the mysterious object, prompting them to investigate further. “We decided to check it out and discovered a massive squid,” Daniel later recounted.
Upon closer inspection, it became evident that the squid surpassed any they had encountered before. Retrieving a tape measure from their car, they determined that its length exceeded an impressive four meters.
When the brothers shared the discovery online, a biologist from the local marine university analyzed the photographs. According to the biologist, the creature belonged to the species Architeuthis sp. and was not one of the largest specimens.
“In full growth, these creatures can reach up to 13 meters. It is likely that the guys stumbled upon a young representative of the species,” the biologist explained.
To facilitate a more comprehensive examination, the squid has been sent to New Zealand’s National Water Research Institute for detailed study.
